'It's for Colombo to be convinced'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Dec. 7 . The Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal, said here tonight that it was for the Sri Lankan Government to believe whether the LTTE has given up its demand for a separate homeland.

Mr. Sibal, who was passing through Chennai on his way to Colombo, told reporters at the airport that Sri Lanka must get "the clarity" on this issue. He was responding to a question on whether India was convinced that the LTTE had given up its homeland demand.

He said it was his first visit to Sri Lanka and he would utilise the opportunity to familiarise himself with the situation and the developments there. India was in favour of the peace process, "on the basis of certain principles and the protection of the legitimate interests of all communities" in the island.

Asked about India's participation in the proposed SAARC summit in Pakistan, Mr. Sibal said a decision would be taken only when the dates were finalised. Till now, no dates had been set for the summit.

Mr. Sibal's visit to Colombo comes shortly after the Oslo conference on the peace process and another round of negotiations between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE.
