A way with words

Bangalore Dec. 8. `A Word a Day' is an eclectic collection of 273 words grouped in unusual ways. There are animal words: `kangaroo court', `waspish'; re-duplicatives such as `shilly shally', 'knick knack'; words to describe people: `adamantine', 'autocratic', and other amusing categories such as `Words that make a spell checker ineffective' or `Words not to put in your resume' such as `distrait' or `truculent'.

There is a section of Portmanteaux words, formed by combining two words — such as smoke and fog which makes smog. There are other words which have become favourites with users of the email service such as `oniomanic' — a mania for buying things.

The Gargs tried to put topical words into their emails: For a week after the September 11 terrorist attack last year, they featured words that expressed grief or dismay and ended with `assuage': relieve the pain.
