dated December 9, 1952: Art Education

From the Editorials: "It is a common error to imagine that art is something remote from life that concerns only the painter and the sculptor, who must realise their dreams in isolation. On the contrary, in any country where there is genuine interest in art, most things are artistic, whether they are posters of canned goods, toys, tea-cups, or motor cars. That is why it is important that the various applied arts should be studied in our country as earnestly as any other branch of learning. A conference of heads of art schools with the Board of Technical Studies in Applied Art has been held in Delhi to co-ordinate art education work. The Board had already prepared a draft scheme to standardise the content and methods of art courses to be taught all over the country. But the conference wisely decided to leave the details of the syllabus and teaching methods to State Governments. It suggested, though, that a general course of three years may be the general pattern to be followed by an advanced course of another two years. Entrants should have passed Matriculation, but even this qualification could be waived in exceptional cases. This is a sensible decision, because very often the student who is clever with his hands is not good at bookwork."
