'Only State can order CBI probe into Jhajjar killings'
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI
DEC. 11.
The Centre today turned down the demand for a CBI probe into the killings of five Dalits at Jhajjar, Haryana, stating that it was up to Haryana to decide as law and order was a State subject.
Responding to clarifications in the Rajya Sabha on a statement regarding atrocities against Dalits in Haryana, Bihar and others parts of the country, the Minister of State for Home, I.D. Swami, said the Haryana Government had already filed chargesheets for major penalties against both administrative and police officials, for negligence and failure to take stock of the situation. Mr. Swami said the incident took place because of a mistaken impression that a cow was being slaughtered openly which aroused the passion of the people and that it should not be treated as an act of atrocity against members of scheduled castes.
