PM condoles Palkhivala's death

New Delhi Dec.11. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, today condoled the death of eminent jurist, Nani Palkhivala, and said he will be long remembered for his courageous defence of democracy during the emergency and espousal of probity in public life.

Describing him as a lawyer par excellence, Mr. Vajpayee said Palkhivala had left a profound mark with his ``balanced opinion, bold expression and clarity of thought on economic cultural and other issues of national importance.''

Mr.Vajpayee recalled his personal association with him and said, ``he will be missed not only by his friends and admirers in the legal fraternity, but also lakhs of countrymen.''

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Pramod Mahajan, said, ``we have lost a visionary, strategist, thinker and, above all, a loving human being. His post-budget speeches, which created history, will always be remembered for its indepth analysis.''

He said Palkhivala gave a new dimension to corporate philosophy and judicial management.

``Throughout his life he championed the cause of making judicial tools accessible to the common man. I pray to God that his family members gather the necessary strength to tide over the crisis,'' Mahajan said.

The Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, said that in the death of Palkhivala, the country had lost an eminent budget analyst and an authority on the Constitution.

Palkhivala had a great knack of presenting the Union Budget in a simple language, which changed the outlook of people towards understanding the budget, Mr. Bhujbal said.

Former chairman of PTI, Pravin Chand Gandhi, today said Palkhivala was an embodiment of India's age-old ideal of `vidya, vinay, sampate'.

The Bar Council of India Vice-Chairman, Adish C.Aggarwala today said Palkhivala's death was a great loss for the profession.

A.V. Birla Group, Chairman, Kumar Mangalam Birla, said, ``Palkhivala was an institution by himself''.

The Congress MP, Murli Deora, said, ``the country has lost a great human being''. Mr. Deora said Palkhivala was a champion of all the deserving causes and personally, ``I have lost a great supporter of mine.''
