One killed as BKU stir turns violent

Basti Dec. 11. A Bharat Kisan Union activist was killed in police firing, and 22 others including 13 policemen, were injured when agitating farmers fought a pitched battle against police in Munderwa Bazar area here today.

The farmers were protesting against the delay in the commencement of cane crushing and non-payment of arrears. BKU sources, however, claimed that at least three of its activists were killed and about 100 others injured in police action.

The agitation, on for the past several days, turned violent today with about 2,500 activists torching two roadways buses, a police jeep and other government vehicles, besides damaging a railway cabin and the railway line, police said.

The agitators also took control of the railway crossing gate by locking its gateman, they said, adding police and PAC have been deployed in the area and efforts were on to control the situation.
