Charges preposterous: Cong.

By Javed M. Ansari

NEW DELHI DEC. 11. The election campaign may have come to an end in Gujarat. But, in the capital, the rhetoric continues to flow thick and fast.

The Congress today joined issue with the caretaker Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, criticising him for saying that Pakistan would applaud if the Congress won the Gujarat polls.

The party spokesperson, Satravath Chaturvedi, said Mr. Modi's statement was an ``example of his mental disability''. And he was quick to point out that Pakistan had more reasons to loath the Congress.

``It was under the Congress Prime Ministers that Pakistan was defeated in three successive wars.''

Mr. Chaturvedi said the ``vitriolic language and the preposterous charges' were an example of the growing desperation in the BJP camp.''

``The rapid improvement in the Congress fortunes has made them resort to desperate means.''

Mr. Chaturvedi charged the BJP and its supporters with terrorising the voters to prevent them from voting.

He alleged that a Madhya Pradesh Minister and several Congress workers were injured in an attack on them by the BJP-VHP cadres.

``We urge the CEC to take urgent measures to ensure free and fair polls.''
