Cong. exudes confidence

By Javed M Ansari

NEW DELHI DEC. 12. Unfazed by the exit poll predictions, the Congress today expressed confidence that the people of Gujarat would reject the "forces of hatred and communalism". "Desperation is writ large on BJP faces because of their impending defeat. We congratulate the people of the State for the high turnout", said the party spokesperson, Anand Sharma.

The Congress said the people had turned out in large numbers, despite the vitriolic campaign launched by the BJP and "attempts to terrorise voters". He decried the strong language used by the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, and his supporters against the Chief Election Commissioner.

"This shows they are desperate and realise they will lose," he said.

Regarding Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Sharma said there was nothing new in the schemes announced by her at the election meeting in Amethi on Wednesday. People started leaving the meeting as soon as Ms. Mayawati started criticising Ms. Gandhi and her daughter, Priyanka Gandhi.
