Pondy tops in sterilisation: Vasaraj

Pondicherry Dec. 12 . The Pondicherry Health Department has established a distinction in the implementation of family welfare services with sterilisation continuing to be the mainstay of promoting the concept of small family norms in the Union Territory, according to the Health Minister, E. Valsaraj.

He said in a press communication today that effective implementation of sterilisation programmes among all eligible couples in Pondicherry resulted in performing the highest number of operations in the country.

The statistics registered in the institutions revealed that in 2001-2002 for every 10,000 unsterilised couples, the department had performed sterilisation on 7536 couples, while the national average during the period was 940.

Mr.Valsaraj said the achievement was made possible because of fuller utilisation of health infrastructure in a properly planned manner and without any sort of coercion.

Dedicated performance by the health personnel and enthusiastic response and acceptance of the concept as a safe procedure by the users had contributed considerably to achieving this enivable record.

The co-ordinated work of the government machinery, voluntary agencies and health service personnel was an exemplary partnership in implementing the scheme.
