Women's entry at Sabarimala: HC for TDB probe

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI DEC. 18. A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court today directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to conduct further probe into a newspaper report on the entry of young women at Sabarimala to watch the `arat' held in connection with the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple festival, after consulting the Tantri and take appropriate action in the matter. The directive was issued by the Bench comprising Justice S. Sankarasubban and Justice A. Lakshmikutty while closing the suo motu proceedings initiated on the basis of a newspaper report.

The Court had earlier directed the Devaswom Commissioner to inquire into the allegations. In his report, the Commissioner pointed out that women were indeed present at the `arat' ceremony, but he was of the view that they were not in the age-limit of 10-50. Besides, there was no violation of the High Court order, because the order was passed in a matter relating to the entry of women in the age-group of 10-50 to the Sannidhanam. The Commissioner had also enclosed the opinion of the Tantri. According to the Tantri, the worship of the idol at the `arat' ceremony by women was not against the custom.
