The State executive committee meeting, chaired by the secretary, R. Nallakannu, said the Centre had already suspended the interest on crop loans in drought-affected districts. But it was not enough, as the farmers were not in a position to repay the principal also. It wanted the State Government to take adequate relief measures in the affected areas. The meeting criticised the AIADMK resolution to file a case against the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, for his remarks against Hinduism, and said this was only a tactics to distract the people's attention from more pressing issues like the drought situation and unemployment. The meeting decided to organise `Pongal festival' in 100 centres to give a fitting reply to those who, it said, were trying to divide the people on caste and community lines. Expressing concern over the condition of the samba crop in the delta districts, it wanted the Central and the State Governments to take immediate steps to assure necessary water supply till harvest. Resolutions demanding the State Government to withdraw its proposed hike in water tariff in various municipal bodies and urging the Kerala Government to drop its move to construct a checkdam across the Bhavani river were also passed.
