Educate entire country for real development, says K.R. Narayanan

KOLKATA DEC. 21. The former President, K.R. Narayanan, today called for educating the entire population for real development of the nation.

Inaugurating the ninth Vidyasagar Mela here, he said mass education was essential for involving the people in the process of development, and felt that the people were still lagging behind largely because of the absence of proper leadership and the Government policies.

He said the average people were interested in getting education but they could not be involved properly.

About the mela's main theme "Women Education", he said men's progress would depend on the women's education and the same concept was true for the nation's development.

Describing Iswarchandra Vidyasagar as a visionary and a social reformer, he said the need for spread of the elementary education, which that great thinker had vouched for long ago, was still very relevant.

He said the nation's development could be accelerated, if the entire population had minimum education, and regretted that still a large number of people remained illiterate.

Mr. Narayanan regretted that despite teachings of many visionaries, including Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, the nation was still to attain the target of educating every citizen.

He said education was key to the nation's progress.
