Decision on sharing Mahadayi waters by March 31
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI
DEC. 21.
The Centre, on Friday, said it would settle the issue of sharing of the Mahadayi-Mondovi river waters among Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra, by March 31.
At an inter-State meetingon the subject there was no consensus on the diversion of 7.56 tmcft of Mahadayi waters by Karnataka for drinking purposes.
Goa raised objections to any diversion of water and disputed the flow figures put out by the Central Water Commission and Karnataka.
The Centre has kept in abeyance its permission to Karnataka for impounding Mahadayi waters following the dispute.
Goa had been pressing the Centre for setting up a tribunal to settle the issue. Karnataka said it had no objection to a tribunal, provided it was allowed to divert waters.
However, it sought time till March to study the statistics.
The meeting, chaired by the Union Water Resources Minister, Arjun Charan Sethi, was attended by the Goa Chief Minister, Manohar Parikkar, and the Karnataka Water Resources Minister, H.K. Patel.
