India should give befitting reply to Pak.: Shekhawat

Indore Dec. 21. The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, today said that India should give a ``befitting reply'' to Pakistan for its involvement in various terrorist attacks, including those on Parliament, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, the Akshardham and Raghunath temples.

``Bharat ko taiyar ho kar ek bar Pakistan ko mooh-tod jawab dena hoga ki yeh atankwad nahin chalega'' (India should give a befitting reply to Pakistan to drive home the point that there is no place for terrorism in India), Mr. Shekhawat said addressing a function here, dedicating the newly- renovated Hemu Kalani three-way near the collectorate.

No Pakistan ruler could continue in power unless he adopted an anti-India stance. Even the people would not allow any leader to remain in power if he did not engage in "India-bashing."

Stating that the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, had assumed power by "undemocratic" means, Mr. Shekhawat maintained that he was indulging in rhetoric such as ensuring Pakistan's rule over Kashmir because he was afraid that he too would meet the same fate as that of some of his predecessors.

Sanjay plan would have worked

Earlier, addressing a seminar on the `Role of media in the present circumstances' organised by the Indore Press Club, Mr. Shekhawat said the five-point programme, which included population control measures, launched during the Emergency by the then Congress leader, Sanjay Gandhi, would have eliminated India's problems if it had been implemented. ``Sanjay's programme would have done the job but failed as it went under the bureaucracy's control.''

Urging the media to ponder over the issue of population explosion, which was giving rise to unemployment, malnutrition and poverty, he said ``if we don't act now, it will be too late and the problem will worsen.''

The Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister, Subhash Yadav, the Minister of State for Communications, Sumitra Mahajan, and the Dainik Bhaskar group's Chief Editor, Ramesh Agrawal, also expressed their views. — PTI, UNI
