NoC issue sparked AIADMK violence: Madurai Mayor

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI DEC. 31. The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, today claimed that the AIADMK councillors indulged in violence yesterday only because the resolution seeking a no-objection certificate for regularising the government land possessed by Manohari, wife of the Assembly Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, from the Corporation, could not be passed.

In a statement, Mr. Ramachandran said just because the council decided to return the proposal to the district administration, the agitated AIADMK councillors "did not allow the council to transact any further business," and asked how could the people's property be handed over to an individual.

While the case against the woman councillor, R. Pandiammal, was still pending before the court, the council disqualifying her for not attending three consecutive meetings would amount to "interfering with the rights of the people who had voted for her."

He quoted that on earlier two occasions, the council had exempted two councillors, including `Misa' Pandiyan who was arrested under a murder charge.

He said many AIADMK party men unattached to the council, led by the party district secretary, Raju, and the MLA, Valarmathi Jebaraj, indulged in violence.

Lamenting over the police ``inaction,'' he said they "acted as if they were AIADMK cadres and also closed the gate obstructing the passage of the Mayor's car."

Mr. Ramachandran asked "if such was the pathetic condition of the city Mayor, how could the general public benefit from the police."

A police complaint was not preferred expecting no action from them.

Wishing the people on the occasion of New Year, the Mayor said the DMK was always committed to work for them whatever the difficulties it faced from the ruling AIADMK.
