PM cannot be taken seriously: IUML

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI JAN. 2. The Indian Union Muslim League today described the `Goa musings' by the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, as a "deliberate attempt to confuse the nation about the threat of Hindutva".

The party's national president, G.M. Banatwala, told reporters here today that though the Prime Minister had attempted to distinguish between `soft and aggressive Hindutva', India faced a clear threat as demonstrated by the genocide that took place in Gujarat. He felt that Mr. Vajpayee was a "different man at different times" and "cannot be taken seriously". The Vajpayee at the BJP national executive meeting in Goa was totally different from the one in Goa. "Unfortunately, the Prime Minister is not true to his convictions, if he has any," Mr. Banatwala said. If Mr. Vajpayee really believed that the `VHP-type Hindutva' was not the `real Hindutva' and was a threat to the country he ought to be taking action against the Sangh Parivar oufit.

The IUML leader demanded action against those responsible for the Godhra incident rather than target an entire community. The Government should act on the reports of the NHRC, Minorities Commission and the enquiry report of a committee headed by V.R. Krishna Iyer on the Gujarat violence. It should come out with a law against genocide in accordance with the U.N. Convention on Crimes of Genocide.
