36 fishermen held captive

By V. S. Sambandan

COLOMBO Jan. 2. Thirty-six Indian fishermen have been reportedly taken into ``custody'' by Sri Lankan fishermen off the island's northern seas for ``encroachment'', sources in the northern Jaffna peninsula said. The fishermen, along with their trawlers, were reportedly taken into `custody' by the Sri Lankan fishermen off Pooneryn, and then handed over to local government officials. Efforts are on by the Indian High Commission here to secure the release of the fishermen, who are from Tamil Nadu.
