CWC meet to discuss Sangh Parivar challenge

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JAN. 4. The Congress Working Committee (CWC), at a meeting tomorrow, is expected to take stock of the debacle in Gujarat, the coming assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and the North East. The meeting will also deliberate on national security and Hindutva.

The AICC general secretary in-charge of Gujarat, Kamal Nath, has reportedly prepared a voluminous report on the debacle in Gujarat and a detailed deliberation is expected on the issue. Hindutva is cited as one of the main reasons for the unprecedented swing in the BJP's favour.

The meeting will be attended by the party Chief Ministers, special and permanent invitees. Besides drawing up a broad strategy for the coming elections, the meeting is also expected to take up the more substantive issue of the challenge from the Sangh Parivar.

There is a growing feeling in the Congress that expect the party president, Sonia Gandhi, there seems to be lack of will in others to join issue with the BJP on contentitious issues such as Hindutva and national security.

Expectations are that a free and frank discussion will enable the party to formulate a coherent and effective response to the high decibel BJP offensive.

Mrs. Gandhi had repeatedly, during her election speeches, as well as in her address to the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) after the Gujarat election, taken an unambiguous position on these issues.
