Sena firm on opposing Jethmalani

The Shiv Sena today threatened ``to go to any extent'' to thwart the lawyer and former Union Minister, Ram Jethmalani's move to defend the three persons sentenced to death in the Parliament attack case.
The Delhi Shiv Sena president, Jai Bhagwan Goyal, who staged a dharna at the Jantar Mantar here along with a dozen advocates to protest Mr. Jethmalani's decision, said: ``The Shiv Sainiks can go to any extent to stop the lawyer from coming to the rescue of those traitors who attacked the heart of Indian democracy.''
Recalling a 1989 incident in which Mr. Jethmalani was manhandled by the alleged supporters of the erstwhile Janata Dal leader, Chandra Shekhar, after the lawyer threw his weight behind the then Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, Mr. Goyal said: ``Mr. Jethmalani may have to undergo a similar treatment at the hands of Shiv Sainiks if he insisted on coming to the defence of the convicts.'' Calling for a collective decision by the lawyer community against defending any ``anti-national criminal,'' the Shiv Sena leader said he had written to the Bar Council of India and the Bar Associations of the Delhi High Court and other courts in this regard.
