The release said that according to reports sent to the Union Healty Ministry by Dr. Al Davies, Director of Medical Intensive Care Unit of the Methodist Hospital, under whom Mr. Maran is receiving treatment, is "progressing well". The report said that "he is spontaneously awake much of the day. He is using muscles in his legs more and continues to make good progress with muscles of his arms. He is progressing well in reducing the ventilatory support to the minimum by having his own respiration. Normally, when this stage of improvement is reached, the doctors contemplate to take him off the ventilator in roughly seven to 10 days". Mr. Maran's heart was "functioning well and his blood pressure is normal. His vital organs are improving and are stable. He is communicative and is able to respond well. Though he is mobile on a wheel chair, he remains on dialysis". The Health Ministry, under the directions of the Prime Minister, was in regular touch with the doctors of the hospital and the Minister of State, A. Raja, was "monitoring the progress personally", the release said, noting that "under these circumstances, he can recover and return within a couple of months".
