Call for partnerships in Space Technology
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE
Jan. 4.
Cross-border terrorism, ever-increasing poverty and recent disasters, including the attack on the World Trade Centre, have given rise to a new policy. International Space agencies, including the ESA of Paris, NASA, ISRO, and Malaysia's Space Research Organisation have called for a "greater collaborative effort for Space technology development and application."
While India and France have already taken steps in this direction, other countries need to follow suit, Nik Nasruddin Mahmud, Director, MACRES, Malaysia, said.
At the Space Summit Session-Vision Talks in the 90th Indian Science Congress, Mr. Mahmud lauded India's achievements in applying Space technology for helping the common man. He, however, urged developing nations, such as India and Malaysia, to forge partnerships for data reception and collaborative research in new Space technologies "to address issues such as food security and risk management."
Emerging areas of applications for Space technology include areas in aviation safety, wildfires, water resources, volcanic eruption, coastal management, crop yield, bio-diversity, disease research, land-use planning, telemedicine and disaster management.
