BSNL, MTNL cut mobile STD tariff

NEW DELHI JAN. 7. Joining the tariff war in cellular telephony, BSNL and MTNL today slashed their mobile-to-mobile STD tariff to bring it slightly lower than the private operators' rates.

BSNL brought it down to Rs. 4.80 a minute from Rs. 9, beyond 500 km., while retaining the existing rates for the below 500 km. categories. It also announced that the STD tariff from mobile to fixed-line telephone would be the same as that of the mobile-to-mobile.

On the other hand, MTNL announced a lower STD tariff of Rs 2.90 per minute for the above 500 km. slab, but customers would have to pay an average airtime of about Rs. 2 a minute along with this.

Mahajan unhappy

Expressing unhappiness over the manner in which BSNL and MTNL have slashed their mobile-to-mobile STD tariff, the Communication Minister, Pramod Mahajan, today said their approach was "reactive and not proactive". Stating that a large number of subscribers were depending on BSNL and MTNL, Mr. Mahajan said he would talk to the Managing Directors of both the telecom PSUs. — PTI
