Cong. farmers' wing plea to Sonia

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi Jan.10. The Kisan and Khet Mazdoor wing of the All-India Congress Committee today urged the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, to lead them against the "anti-farmer" policies of the NDA Government.

In a memorandum presented to Ms. Gandhi, the delegation said the sugar industry owed Rs. 11,000 crores to about five crore sugarcane growers and it had forced the farming community to face a severe financial crisis.

The memorandum blamed the NDA Government for levying excise duty on sugar, not subsidising sugar exports for making it competitive in the world market, not promoting sugarcane as a raw material and lack of barter sales as some of the causes for the sugar industry's woes. The situation called for providing an immediate financial package to the industry for making payment to the growers. Leading the delegation, Balram Jakhar demanded that sugar be declared a food item and the Government provide the industry subsidy under green box for food and income security to sugarcane growers.
