'It is my duty to defend an accused'

New Delhi Jan. 10. Lawyer and former Union Minister, Ram Jethmalani, today questioned the propriety of the Shiv Sena chief, Bal Thackeray's demand for his resignation as Rajya Sabha member.

Stating that he would appear for one of the accused in the Parliament attack case, Syed Geelani, Mr. Jethmalani said, ``It is my duty under the law to defend any accused who approaches me. If I refuse to do so, I will be liable to be disqualified as an advocate.''

Mr. Thackeray had said that before defending the ``traitor'', Mr. Jethmalani should resign his Rajya Sabha seat that he had "won with the help of the Shiv Sena votes".

Mr. Jethmalani said, "Who is he to ask me to quit? I won the Rajya Sabha seat not with the votes of Shiv Sena alone but with the support of BJP, Janata Dal and Independents."— PTI
