Training programme to make youth IT-savvy

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN. 10. In a major effort to exploit the potential of the IT-enabled services, the State Government has formulated a comprehensive training programme with a view to equipping educated unemployed youth to seize the existing and emerging opportunities.

Announcing this in a chat with mediapersons at the Technopark here today, P. K. Kunhalikutty, Minister for Industries and Information Technology, said that the Government would sign an accord with leading IT multinationals to provide the training necessary in this area.

With an envisaged 70 per cent growth in the IT sector in the State, it has been estimated that over 2 million jobs would be created in the next few years. What the State woefully lacked was adequately trained personnel to meet the requirements of the industry, he said.

The present situation would be assessed and based on the findings, the inadequacies would be addressed, informed Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary, Information Technology. This was the first major initiative in this direction, she added.

Under the programme to be soon launched throughout the State, training would be provided to team leaders, supervisors and managers through institutions like the AT & T College. The services of such trained trainers would be made use of for improving the communicative skills of the youth, she said.

The Department of Higher Education would join hands with the IT Department to make learning materials available in the colleges and academic departments of the universities, said K. Mohandas, Prinicipal Secretary, Higher Education.
