By K. Subramanian

Kancheepuram JAN. 13. Copies of the 518-page charge sheet and one video and two audio cassettes were today given to the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, and eight other party leaders, arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, by L. Rajendran, judge of the Special Court at Poonammalle, near here. After consulting the public prosecutor, S. Jayakumar, and counsel for the accused, he posted the case to February 10.

Mr. Vaiko, along with the district secretaries, Ganesamurthy, Elavarasan, Bhoominathan and Pulavar Sevanthiappan; the former MLA, P. S. Manian; Alagu Sundaram, Nagarajan and Ganesan, appeared in the jampacked court.

The public prosecutor told The Hindu that the charge sheet, filed on December 30 by the `Q' branch CID police under Sections 21 (2) (support to a terrorist organisation) and 21 (3) (committing an offence by addressing a meeting to encourage support to a terrorist organisation) read with the penal Section 21 (4) of the POTA, was based on the findings made by the tribunal constituted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

He said the role played by Mr. Vaiko and his partymen in supporting the LTTE, a banned terrorist organisation, was explained in detail.

The charge sheet also focussed on their intention in openly supporting the LTTE through their speeches, made after it had been banned in India.

It cited 115 witnesses, 106 documents, 154 statements of witnesses, 23 material objects and 43 individual exhibits.

Nedumaran remand extended

Meanwhile, the remand for the Tamilar Desiya Iyakkam president, P. Nedumaran; the general secretary, Suba Veerapandian, and Pudukottai Paavanan, who were also arrested under the POTA was extended till January 24.

They were produced in the court in the afternoon.

Mr. Jayakumar, said some more details had to be collected for filing the charge sheet.

N. Chandrasekaran, counsel said it was likely to be filed on January 24 as Mr. Nedumaran would complete 180-day remand on January 27.
