Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
Though the Railway Minister announced 16 pairs of Jan Shatabdi Express in his last budget in February between various cities in the country, there was not a single service linking two major towns in Tamil Nadu. Following representations from political parties and traders associations, the Ministry now agreed to sanction a new service on the Thanjavur-Coimbatore section. Announcing this at a press conference here today, the Union Minister of State for Railways, A.K. Moorthy, said the service would run via Tiruchi and Erode, and the running time would be 5 hours and 30 minutes. It would leave Thanjavur at 7 a.m., and reach Coimbatore at 12.30 p.m. It would leave Coimbatore at 2.15 p.m. and arrive at Thanjavur at 8 p.m. The Chennai Egmore-Madurai superfast special would be extended to Tirunelveli from January18 with more carriages. From Tirunelveli a portion of the train would run up to Guruvayur via Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram. The arrival time at Guruvayur would be 4.40 a.m.
