The Governor, in his message, urged the people to draw lessons for the future from the travails of the past. "Though the year gone by has not been kind to the State, it is my fervent hope that better times are ahead of us. We should learn to insulate the State's farm economy from the vagaries of the monsoon by efficient water management and optimal cropping methods." The Chief Minister asked the people to take a vow to obtain the State's share of Cauvery water. There was no true joy in Pongal celebrations this time. Although cultivation was not possible on dry fields now, the challenge could be overcome through determination. "Times would change, and the drought too would vanish." It was a "very unhappy Pongal" for her, she told the media at the Secretariat. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, too referred to the drought situation. Not just farmers, but workers, weavers, merchants, government employees and teachers too would be unable to celebrate Pongal under a government which was not thankful for the mandate given to it. The MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, the PMK founder, S. Ramadoss, the CPI(M) State secretary, N. Varadarajan, the AICC secretary, G.K. Vasan, also extended their greetings.
