Joining issue with the BJP national secretary, L. Ganesan, Mr. Karunanidhi said even BJP leaders could not possibly oppose his party's stand against reforms that increased unemployment and closed down profit-making public sector enterprises.
Mr. Ganesan, speaking at Hosur, had said the DMK should not have criticised the economic reforms while being part of the ruling NDA.
The DMK representatives in the Cabinet could have voiced their opposition to the reforms.
Mr. Karunanidhi, however, said the NDA manifesto itself had promised to reverse the trend of jobless growth.
All those who were interested in the country's economic growth and welfare of workers would welcome the DMK resolution.
Referring to Mr. Ganesan remark that DMK Ministers should have raised their objection in the Cabinet, he said the DMK resolution had specifically mentioned the ``recent'' decisions taken by the Centre. Moreover, the Centre had been unable to proceed with disinvestment measures in profit-making companies such as the BPCL and the HPCL only because of opposition from senior ministers.
``How could it be wrong on the part of the DMK to oppose the sale of profit-making oil companies which were important for security, and which fulfilled the day-to-day needs of the people ?'' he asked.
In this context, Mr. Karunanidhi wondered if the BJP MP, representing the Nilgiris, would support the privatisation of Hindustan Photo Films. Any criticism of the DMK resolution by attributing new meanings to it could only be political, he said.
