Panel to chart out new transport policy

NEW DELHI JAN. 14. The Delhi Transport Minister, Ajay Maken, today announced the constitution of a Delhi Transport Planning Group (DTPG) under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, to ensure speedy, well-coordinated and effective implementation of an action plan for the city's transport sector including major projects like a high capacity bus system and electronic trolley buses.

Mr. Maken said the DTPG would have the Delhi Transport Minister, Chief Secretary, Shailja Chandra, the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, S. Regunathan, the Joint Secretary Department of Personnel and Training, O.P. Agarwal, Prof. Dinesh Mohan of IIT Delhi, and Director (RITES), B.I. Singhal, as its members. The Delhi Transport Commissioner would be the member-secretary.

The Delhi Transport Planning Group would also lay down policy and work as the apex body for strategic planning for public transportation systems till a statutory body like Integrated Metropolitan Transport Authority is set up.

The DTPG would ensure that all the major project and those time bound are implemented in a clinical manner in coordination with the various agencies and departments involved in this colossal exercise. Mr. Maken informed the Delhi Government had also constituted a Core Group for the implementation of High Capacity Bus System and Electric Trolley Bus project.

The Core Group is chaired by the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (Finance), Principal Secretary (Planning), CMD (DTC), Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police, Engineer-in-Chief (PWD) are its members.

The Commissioner Transport would be the convener of the Core Group. Mr. Singhal has been appointed as the consultant to the group. The Minister explained that it was essential for a metropolis to have an integrated metropolitan transport authority to ensure a well coordinated and efficient multi-modal public transport system.

A two member Core Group consisting of Secretary-cum-Commissioner (Transport) and Mr. O.P. Aggarwal, has been set up to frame a draft legislation for Integrated Metropolitan Transport Authority.
