Women's group condemns 'diktat'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JAN. 21. The National Federation of Indian Women today condemned the `diktat' being issued by some Jammu and Kashmir militant groups to women; asking them to give up their jobs in police and threatening them with dire consequences if they refused to fall in line.

In a statement, the NFIW general secretary, Sehba Farooqui, said that Muslim women were increasingly becoming the target of terrorist violence in the State. "A vicious and violent campaign has been launched by right-wing and fundamentalist militant groups to deprive women of their hard won rights, their freedom and their dignity.''

Shocked by the violent reprisals, the NFIW urged the people to unitedly resist the move to impose restrictions on women and reduce them to the status of "inferior beings." It also asked the State Government to create an atmosphere for women to live fearlessly and with dignity.
