According to party sources, the District Congress Committee president, Basavaraj Bulla, has received applications from eight candidates. They are: R.S. Manohar, former MLC, Srikanth Patil, who contested as KCP candidate in 1994; Babu Thumba, Basavanthrao Deshmukh, Moosamia, Khaleel, Subash Kashimpur, former zilla panchayat member; and Bakkappa Sherikar, president of the Backward Classes Cell. Rajashekar Patil, son of the district in-charge Minister, Basavaraj Patil Humnabad, who unsuccessfully contested the 1999 Assembly elections as the Congress candidate, has so far not made a representation to be considered.
