Plea to set up radio station in Kupwara

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JAN. 24. With a view to countering the anti-India propaganda on Pakistani media, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to set up a full-fledged radio station in Kupwara.

Mr. Sayeed communicated a formal request to this effect during his meeting with the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Sushma Swaraj, here today. She is said to have informed him that the State's request would be examined. Though Kupwara had a relay centre, the Chief Minister said it ought to be converted into a full-fledged station to facilitate the production of programmes in local dialects.

Ministry sources said Mr. Sayeed's contention was that local programming would go a long way in countering the misinformation campaign run by Pakistan against India. And since people across the contentious border with Pakistan tuned into Indian programming, a radio station in Kupwara would also help generate awareness at the local level in Pakistan about that country's anti-India propaganda.

Also, J&K has made out a case for expanding the network of low power transmitters (LPTs) in the State to spread the reach of Doordarshan. To this Ms. Swaraj is said to have told Mr. Sayeed that the Ministry would first like to see the impact of the large number of LPTs and High Power Transmitters (HPTs) that were being installed in the State as part of the Rs. 430 crores special package for J&K. ince the installation would be completed by this year, Ms. Swaraj has suggested that her Ministry and the State Government could jointly finalise the sites for additional transmitters if more areas needed to be covered.

Mr. Sayeed has also sought reservation of seats for the youth of the State in the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, and empanelment of Kashmiri newspapers for DAVP advertisements.
