Though Mr. Singh said he had told the CBI that he had resigned from the Board of Directors of the company, the agency may still look for his financial dealings with it. Highly placed sources said that soon after his resignation as one of the directors, Mr. Singh had been trying to straighten his financial wrangling ever since the scandal broke out in September 2001. The chairman of Flex Industries, Ashok Chaturvedi, was arrested by the CBI for allegedly bribing the Central Excise Commissioner, Someshwar Mishra. The senior revenue service officer was also arrested. As the scandal began unfolding, the CBI stumbled upon names of several bigwigs in the political as well as bureaucratic circles who had availed of hospitality of Mr. Chaturvedi. It was the same yardstick that was used to remove Prabhat Kumar as Governor of Jharkhand. Mr. Singh's name had figured as one of the Flex directors which led the CBI to also look for one crucial aspect: who was paying for his high-profile and lavish parties? As Mr. Singh was hesitant to come to the CBI headquarters, a team of senior officers was sent to his residence yesterday to get his version which would be scrutinised by the agency in the next few days. If indications from the agency are to be believed, many heads are likely to roll in the coming weeks as many IAS and IPS officers of U.P. cadre and some of the well known names in the political arena, particularly those having links with the so-called "Kanpur Club'', may come under the CBI scanner. It may be recalled that Mr. Chaturvedi and a senior IAS officer of U.P., Ms. Neera Yadav, have been charge sheeted by the CBI in a separate case on October 21 last year. The case relates to alleged irregularities in allotment of land at Noida near Delhi at arbitrarily reduced prices to the Flex group of companies which led to unlawful gain of Rs. 1.12 crores to it.
