Students' healthcare software is their ticket to Beijing

By Anand Parthasarathy

BANGALORE FEB. 18. A hospital automation software, developed by a trio of Mumbai-based Computer Science students, took the first prize today at the national "Campus Challenge'' organised by Microsoft India.

The threesome from the Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology used the new ".Net'' environment for pervasive computing, to create a state-of-the-art framework, where patient records and doctor's diagnostic tools are accessible at the click of a mouse and automatically integrated with medical test reports and online monitoring systems.

The system links distant users through Pocket PCs and mobile phones to provide alerts to medical workers on the move and enable rural patients.

For Tejas Shah, Abhijeet Akhawe and Yash Doshi, today's national win is their ticket to Beijing. They will fly to the Chinese capital next week where they will represent India at the Asia-Pacific finals.

The first runner-up at the Bangalore national contest was IIT Madras, whose team also showcased an innovative healthcare solution. IIT Guwahati's business to business (BtoB) portal for the tea industry using the XML web services was the second runner-up.

The annual contest sponsored by Microsoft drew 649 entries from 259 colleges in India. Teams from REC Durgapur, DAV Jalandhar, IIT Mumbai, IIIT Hyderabad and R.V. College Bangalore, excelled at the zonal level.
