Programmes for women's welfare

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM March 7. The Kerala State Women's Development Corporation (KSWDC) has announced a slew of initiatives for women's welfare in connection with United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace on Saturday.

These include a reduction in the interest rate on self-employment loans for women belonging to backward and minority communities from seven per cent to six per cent and an extension in the repayment period for loans taken by physically handicapped women from five years to seven years.

In a press release here today, the KSWDC said it would be setting up homes in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Malappuram to rehabilitate widows and other socially ostracized women. They would also be given training in various avocations.

A State Institute of Training for Women is proposed to be set up in Kozhikode to provide training to women in computer operation, food processing, fashion designing, assembling electronic equipment and similar trades. This institute will start functioning on March 30.
