International food processing exhibition inaugurated

NEW DELHI MARCH 9. The Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, N.T. Shanmugam, today said the food processing was a sunrise sector with unlimited export potential and the industry needs to tap the business opportunities in India and abroad.

He stressed the need to adopt the latest technologies, avoiding wastage of agricultural produce and induction of foreign direct investment in the sector while speaking at the inauguration of Aahar 2003, the international exhibition for food processing hotel and restaurant equipment and supplies at Pragti Maidan here.

The Minister said such specialised events were significant to create interactive coupling between technology, economy and society for speedy development of the food processing sector. He said the Ministry has proposed different schemes to provide necessary impetus to this segment during tenth Five Year Plan.

It has been providing all possible support and financial assistance in the North Eastern States and Himachal Pradesh which have tremendous potential. For setting up a food processing unit, assistance is granted up to 25 percent of the capital cost in normal areas and even higher in difficult areas subjected to upper limits of rupees 50 lakhs and 75 lakhs respectively.

This year a number of seminars, symposia and presentations on the problems and prospects of food processing industries are also being organised to make the event more focused.

Spread over halls 14 and 18, Aahar 2003 has been organised with the support of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, All India Food Preservers Association, APEDA, ARCHI and CIFTI. As many as 200 companies from India and abroad are participating in this event.

The U.S.and Poland have country level participation while Canada, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Israel and the U.K. are represented by their leading companies. The exhibition is open till March 13.
