G.D. Birla award for geneticist

NEW DELHI MARCH 13. The 12th G.D.Birla Award for Scientific Research for 2002 has been conferred on Partha Partim Majumdar, Head of the Anthropology and Human Genetics Department at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. Prof. Majumdar has served as Founding Chair of the Ethics Committee of the International Genetics Epidemiology Society and is currently serving on the National Bioethics Committee, Government of India, and on UNESCO's Working Group on Human Genetics Data.

He has made significant contributions to human genetics and evolution using molecular genetics statistical and anthropological methods. He devised innovative paradigms and statistical methods to solve biological problems related to modes of inheritance of complex human traits and mapping genes underlying such traits.
