Jayalalithaa announces schemes for Sattankulam

Sattankulam March 14. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, who came here last month with a "bagful of promises" for byelection campaign, visited the place today again to unleash gifts for voters, who gave the AIADMK unprecedented triumph. A women's college, a sports stadium, a palm sugar centre, a palm water manufacturing unit, upgradation of two public health centres to full-fledged hospitals and four new health sub-centres were some of the schemes she announced.

Inaugurating developmental works and laying the foundation for new projects in Tuticorin district to the tune of Rs. 163.21 crores, besides distributing assistance to beneficiaries at a function held this evening, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the Government earmarked a sum of Rs. 50 lakhs for the establishment of the women's college, which would come up on a 30-acre land.

A modern sports complex would be established at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs. Besides this, volleyball grounds would be created in 10 places in villages at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs.

Speaking at the function, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she had brought with her schemes to the tune of Rs. 15.30 crores in the first phase for overall development in the constituency. A palmgur manufacturing unit would be set up with the help of the Khadi department, she said adding a sum of Rs. 4 lakhs would be spent on maintenance work to be carried out in 16 health sub centres and two primary health centres. This apart, four health sub centres would be established at a cost of Rs. 25 lakhs. The PHCs at Alwarthirunagiri and Karungulam would be upgraded as a 30-bedded hospital at a cost of Rs 1.10 crores. A sum of Rs. 40 lakhs would be spent on carrying out repair works of a bridge linking Anavaradhanalloor and Azhikudi.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said a sum of Rs. 54 lakhs would be spent on establishing an English language laboratory in Government High Schools at Ramanujam Pudur, Sundankottai and Mavadipannai and in Government Higher Secondary Schools at Karungulam and Kommadikottai.

Keeping in mind the problems faced by Periatalai fishermen, while venturing into the sea for fishing, the Government would examine their long-felt demand of construction of a groyne at a cost of Rs. 4 crores.

The Chief Minister said schemes would be drafted for setting up small business units such as manufacture of muscoth halwa. She assured the people during the occasion that the Government would come out with more schemes for the area, apart from the rest of Tuticorin.

Taking a dig at the Opposition parties for finding fault with her for distributing assistance to beneficiaries in the districts, she said it only exposed the ineffectiveness.

The Speaker K. Kalimuthu, the Ministers O Paneerselvam, Nainar Nagendran, B. Valarmathi and Anitha R. Radhakrishnan spoke. The Chief Minister sang a couple of lines from a song of an MGR film.
