Single ticket system for MMTS mooted

By M. Rajeev

HYDERABAD March 23. Even as the efforts for starting the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) to ease the traffic problems in the city are gaining momentum, steps are under way to introduce a single ticket system facilitating travel in both trains and buses on the same ticket.

A three-member committee, comprising senior officials of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and the South Central Railways, had prepared proposals for issuing monthly tickets to commuters, on the lines of the general bus passes and seasonal railway passes, in the interest of commuters who opt to travel by both buses and trains to reach their destinations. "The proposal for single ticket travel was mooted to ensure that the commuters are not forced to buy tickets separately for travelling in trains and buses,'' the vice-chairman and managing director of the APSRTC, R.P. Singh, said. For instance, if a passenger wishes to travel from Lingampally to the Secretariat, he can opt for a train from Lingampally to Khairatabad from where he can board a bus to the Secretariat on the same ticket, he told The Hindu.

A similar system is already operational in respect of Tirupati wherein passengers can directly reserve their tickets upto Tirumala instead of Tirupati.

According to tentative proposals prepared by the committee comprising representatives from the RTC and the South Central Railways, the monthly ticket is expected to cost Rs. 410 of which Rs. 260 is likely to be the share of the RTC, while the balance Rs. 150 would be the SCR's share. Senior officials of the corporation said that the cost of Rs. 410 for the monthly ticket was arrived at after taking into account the existing fares of the general bus tickets and the seasonal railway ticket which works out to around Rs. 310 and Rs. 195 respectively. "However, the proposal is still in a preliminary stage and it should get the approval from the Railway Board as well as the RTC board before it becomes operational,'' the RTC Hyderabad city region manager, G. Panduranga Murthy, a member of the committee, said.
