Develop team spirit, Moily tells students

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE MARCH 31. Tradition, complemented by exploration, can help man achieve greater heights, the former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, has said. He was speaking after distributing the "talent awards" instituted by Mangalore University for winners of inter-university and inter-collegiate sports and cultural competitions, here on Monday.

Mr. Moily said while India ranked among the top nations as far as the intelligence quotient (IQ) of people was concerned, it fared badly on the competitive index.

Likening culture to a river, he said it was important to realise the changing quality of culture.

Noting that many civilisations had been wiped out as they failed to recognise this vibrant nature of culture, he said human efforts should be canalised towards preserving and protecting culture.

This could be achieved through community participation, he said.

Addressing the winners in various competitions, Mr. Moily said sports and cultural activities provided inner peace. He said the winners could hone their skills through dedication.

Mr. Moily said it was important to place the "team" over "individuals". No team could hope to succeed if its members put individual goals ahead of the team's goal.

If a team realised its collective spirit, it would remain invincible, he said. Mr. Moily was all admiration for Shwetha Kumari, II-year BA student of SDM College, Ujire, who performed mimicry on the occasion. She won third place in the inter-university youth festival organised by Kakatiya University, Warangal, between February 7 and 11, 2003. She received a memento from Mr. Moily.

Presiding over the function, the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, B.Hanumaiah, said the university had organised this function for the first time to encourage students to participate actively in sports and cultural activities.

Prof. Hanumaiah, however, lamented that the number of students participating in sports and cultural activities was not very encouraging.

Revealing that the university had earmarked funds to honour achievers, he said the principals of institutions under the jurisdiction of Mangalore University had been told to encourage students in this regard.

Ashok of Alvas College, Moodbidri, and Divya Alva of Besant Women's College received Rs. 3,000 each for winning gold medals at all-India meets. Vijayalaxmi of SDM College and Neeha Shetty of Canara College, Mangalore, received Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000, respectively.

SDM College, Ujire, was declared overall sports champion for 2002-03.

Its Principal, B. Yashovarma, and the Physical Education Director, B. Bhaskar, received trophies and Rs. 7,500 from Mr. Moily. St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, and St. Philomena's College, Puttur, finished second and third, respectively, in the overall championship.

St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, and SDM College finished first and second in the men's section. SDM College and St. Agnes College, Mangalore, followed suit in the women's section.

The Director of Students' Welfare, Shivaram Holla, and the Director in-charge of the Department of Physical Education, Nagalingappa, presented reports on cultural and sporting activities.

The Registrar of Mangalore University, K. Sundar Naik, welcomed the gathering.

The Chairman of the Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University, M.S. Prakash, proposed a vote of thanks.

Chinappa Gowda, faculty member in the Department of Kannada, Mangalore University, compered the programme.

Members of the Syndicate and Academic Council and principals of various colleges were present.
