Implementation of VAT postponed

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore March 31. The Karnataka Government today announced the postponement of the implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) as the Karnataka Value Added Tax Bill is yet to become a law (Act).

The announcement came through a statement from the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Ashok Kumar C. Manoli after the Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die today.

Mr. Manoli said the Karnataka Value Added Tax Bill, which had been passed by the two Houses of the State Legislature, was now before the Union Government (President of India) for its approval. The date of implementation would be notified once the approval for the Bill was received. The Commissioner added that the Karnataka Sales Tax Act, 1957, would continue to be applied to dealers who had been provided with the provisional VAT registration letter and tax payers' identification numbers.
