Vellaiyan, two others released on bail

CHENNAI APRIL 7. The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai president, T. Vellaiyan, and two others arrested on April 1 during the nationwide trade bandh, were today granted conditional bail by the principal sessions judge, M. Jayapal.

Mr. Vellaiyan, Devaraj and Jagadeesan were arrested allegedly for causing damage to public property worth Rs. 300. According to the police, a group of trade association office-bearers indulged in violence by breaking glass panes and showcases of shops during the bandh against imposition of VAT.

Granting bail, the judge said, ``it is a fit case for granting bail.

They are ordered to be released on bail on their executing a personal bond for Rs. 5,000 each with two sureties for a like sum each to the satisfaction of the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate''.

He also imposed a condition that the petitioners should deposit a sum of Rs. 1,000 each to the court, and report before the Secretariat police at 10 a.m. daily for a month.
