City development: all-party delegation to meet CM

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 7. The Capital City Development Forum has decided to send an all-party delegation to meet the Chief Minister and press the Government to expedite priority projects for the development of the capital region.

An emergency meeting of the forum held here today came to the conclusion that the delay in taking up the projects had led to a grave situation. Pointing out that assurances by successive Governments had failed to yield results, several participants demanded direct action against the political leadership. They said most of the projects proposed for the capital city were hampered by agitations.

The former Speaker, M. Vijayakumar, who is the chairman of the forum, said the all-party delegation would seek the Government's stand on the development of the international airport and the setting up of a High Court Bench. He said that by failing to acquire land for the airport, the State Government had allowed the Central allocation of Rs. 30 crores to lapse.

Mr. Vijayakumar said the Government should consider the proposal to set up a land bank along the Kovalam-Kazhakuttom IT corridor. He said the forum would be forced to launch an agitation if the Government failed to take up long-pending projects. The meeting decided to depute an all-party delegation to meet the Chief Minister before the April 20.

The meeting also urged the Government to expedite the Canal Walk project and the Vizhinjam harbour and take up the proposals for setting up an IIT, Ayurveda University, National Institute for Biotechnology and Heart Foundation.

The Mayor, J. Chandra, the Deputy Mayor, Sujanapriyan, the BJP leader, B.K. Sekhar, the former MLA, Antony Raju, the president of the Confederation of Residents Associations, K.P. Karunakaran Nair, and the representatives of the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy, the Builders Association and the Chamber of Commerce were among those who attended the meeting.
