The Registrar of the academy, V.N.Mallikarjuna Swamy, told The Hindu on Thursday that there were 18 categories and the book adjudged the best in each category would be given a cash prize of Rs. 5,000. Books published in 2002 were eligible for the prize, he added. Poetry (including vachanas and in couplet form), novels, short stories, drama, essays, travelogues, autobiographies, literary criticism, compilation, children's literature, science literature, subjects that come under humanities, research, translations, and critique are some of the major categories, he said. Besides, the academy would also give a prize for the best maiden work, and a special prize instituted by a U.S.-based Kannada association for the best translation from Kannada to English, Mr. Mallikarjuna Swamy said. He clarified that the academy would not consider republished works, books on folklore, academic dissertations, doctoral theses, textbooks, and books authored by academy award winning writers for the prize. Interested persons may send an ordinary copy of the books (specifying the category) to the Registrar, Karnataka Sahitya Academy, Kannada Bhavan, 2nd Floor, J.C.Road, Bangalore 560 002 on or before April 30.
