'Karunakaran should not have been hurt'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 10. The KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, today said that the Congress party leadership should have taken care not to hurt K. Karunakaran, considering his seniority.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Muraleedharan said that he had issued the directive to the party MLAs to vote for the official candidates for the RS elections as per the direction of the Party High Command. He was merely performing his duty as KPCC president, he added.

When asked for his views whether it was the responsibility of the Chief Minister to ensure the victory of the party candidates, Mr. Muraleedharan was non-committal. He said that the Chief Minister was indeed responsible for ensuring the victory of the party candidates as the leader of the Congress legislature party, but there were others too who were responsible for ensuring this.

Mr. Muraleedharan said that R. Balakrishna Pillai, T. M. Jacob and A. V. Thamarakshan had met him and pleaded for an early end to the crisis in the Congress. Mr. Muraleedharan also made it clear that he did not intend to quit office even after April 14.
