A.P. response to naxal demands soon

By Our Staff Reporter

ONGOLE APRIL 10. The Director-General of Police, P. Ramulu, has said that the Andhra Pradesh Government is making all out effort for the release of the kidnapped policemen, and exuded confidence that a statement to be released by the Government will satisfy the militants.

A high-power committee, headed by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, was examining the naxalites' demands from all angles and a positive response was likely to come, he told reporters at Markapur on Thursday.

The DGP arrived at Markapur in the morning and later the district headquarters town by a chopper to visit and console family members of the kidnapped policemen, who were on indefinite hunger strike demanding the Government to respond fast to the naxalites' demands so that the policemen would be released.

Enquiring about the health condition of the fasting persons, he said that the Government had understood their anguish and agony about the safety of the abducted men. He assured them that the Government would get the policemen released. He said the Chief Minister had appealed to the naxalites thrice so far.

He once again appealed to the militants not to harm their captives and release them safely. He said everyone was happy with the release of the home guard, D. Babu Rao.The police were not torturing tribal people during combing operations, he said, and added that they never behaved as dictators with the people. The department had never tolerated the police highhandedness and punished the guilty officers.

Accompanied by the Additional DG (Law and Order), Umesh Kumar, the Greyhounds IG, Anuragh Sarma and the SP, Charu Sinha, the DGP also visited the hunger strike camp here around 3 p.m. Enquiring about the health condition of the Pedaraveedu SI, Anjaneyulu's wife and daughter, he suggested to them to give up the fast in view of summer.Anjaneyulu's wife told the DGP that her husband was not keeping well and she was very much worried about his health. Mr. Ramulu assured them that there was nothing to be concerned about as the PW demands were under active consideration.

Asked as to why there was delay on the part of the authorities in responding to the militants' demands, he said: "The Government is positive and it will make an announcement to that effect very soon.''

Relatives set out for forest

Earlier, in an effort to make a strong appeal to the People's War some 260 persons, comprising sympathisers, relatives and family members of the policemen, set out for the Nallamala forest.

They included the two children of constable S. Brahmendrakumar, his mother and eight relatives of other kidnapped cops.

Two truckloads of people started from Markapur around noon and on way to the forest they were joined by 70 persons at Dornala and 30 at Yerragondapalem in two more lorries.

They held a rally at Dornala and meetings at villages lying on the way to Chilakacharla Chenchugudem, 23 km from Dornala.

They appealed to the naxalites not to harm the three policemen who were never involved in any anti-extremist operation.

They shouted slogans like `policela praanalanu mee korkelato mudi pettakandi' (do not link your demands with the policemen lives).

Around 3 p.m they reached chenchugudem where they took shelter at a tribal residential school.

They seemed to have selected the place to meet the naxalites as the freed homeguard returned to Markapur from the same place after the naxalites released him on Tuesday night.
