Central Zone police a trendsetter

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 10. The Central Zone police have created a record of sorts by organising security arrangements for as many as 199 visits of the Chief Minister in the last one year.

It was on the same day last year the Central Zone was inaugurated in Hyderabad Police Commissionerate limits. In the last 365 days, the police had made bandobust for 785 permitted rallies and tackled 228 processions which were taken out even after denial of permission.

In addition to 83 visits of foreign dignitaries or VVIPs and 52 programmes attended by the Governor, the zone police had made security arrangements for three sessions of the Assembly spanning a total of 75 days. ``Being a newly-carved out zone with comparatively frequent movements of VVIPs, our men had a tough time tackling law and order situation as well as organising bandobust,'' says the DCP (Central), C.V. Anand. General policing apart, the zone police had been a trendsetter with some innovative experiments.

``By introducing the Lake Police and installing surveillance cameras on the Necklace road, we have heralded a revolution in keeping a tab on movements of violators of law,'' a beaming Mr. Anand says. Apart from this, the police have several other `firsts' to their credit.

Ramgopalpet police station was the first in entire city - even in the State -- to announce a citizen's charter. In a unique experiment, the non-core functions of the police like typing case diaries were outsourced to private agencies which was being emulated by all other zones in the city.

A special software was evolved to prepare data base of each sector of a police station and evaluate the performance of the SI concerned.

A specific campaign was undertaken to check ragging after such incidents were reported in the Gandhi Medical College.

So far, 3,980 criminal cases and 8,604 petty cases were registered in the zone. While 613 non-bailable warrants were pending, 1,942 cases were under investigation.

A meeting of the Central Zone police officers is being held on Saturday to review the performance.
