Mr. Dasgupta said there had been mounting attacks on the working classes in the organised and unorganised sector, including agriculture. The recent strike by the employees of two giant oil companies and the power sector was an indication of the resentment against privatisation. Economic recovery had been low and the Centre was all set to dilute labour laws to curtail the labour cost, Mr. Dasgupta said. The latest move was the proposal to reduce the interest rates on the Employees Provident Fund by one per cent. that would cause a loss of Rs. 1,500 crores annually to three crore contributors. Barring the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh and the Indian National Trade Union Congress, all central trade unions and employees federations have called for the general strike.
