Tamil Nadu
By Our Staff Reporter
He was addressing a public meeting got up by the Vellore East district DMK here to condemn the ``anti-people attitude'' of the AIADMK Government and its ``throttling'' of legislative democracy. Mr. Karunanidhi said one of the cases framed against the DMK youth wing leader, M. K. Stalin, was that he tried to murder policemen. In this connection, he referred to the murders committed allegedly by dacoits in the presence of the police in the heart of Vellore last night. ``I express my condolences to not only the families of the deceased but also the police'', he said. The hands of the police were tied and that the knots would be untied only to arrest and foist cases on Mr. Stalin, himself, Vaiko (MDMK leader), K. Ponmudi, former Minister, and Nakkheeran Gopal, who were fighting to uphold democracy and oppose authoritarianism. Mr. Karunanidhi said untoward incidents had become a daily affair under the AIADMK regime. Either there were murders or at least five persons, on an average, were killed daily in road accidents. His constructive suggestions to avoid accidents were ignored by this Government, whose ``only aim of coming to power is to destroy all Opposition and destroy Karunanidhi and his family''. Referring to the truck strike, Mr. Karunanidhi criticised the attitude of the State Government, not inviting the striking associations for talks. Given that some of the demands of the truck operators were meant to be implemented by the State Governments, the Tamil Nadu Government could have met the demands which lay within its control and asked the Centre to implement others which fell within its jurisdiction.
